Drivers are being made aware of changes to road rules, which came into effect on 1 October 2026
The rules now are:
- Require drivers to give way to buses entering the line of traffic on roads that have a speed limit of 60km or less.
- Require drivers of motor vehicles to safely pass cyclists, horse riders, and other road users at a minimum overtaking distance of 1.5 metres.
- Allow children 12 years old and under to ride bikes on footpaths and for an older rider to accompany them.
- Allow people to ride electric scooters in cycle lanes.
