Chinese manufacturer BYD has expanded its NZ line-up with the introduction of two new models
The two new models are led by the upgraded Shark 6 Performance utility.
The Shark 6 Performance builds on the existing platform with increases in both power and towing capability. Output rises to 350kW and 700Nm, modest gains over the previous Shark 6 Premium, while maximum towing capacity has been lifted to 3500kg. That figure places it in line with established diesel utes commonly used across rural and commercial sectors. Drivers towing above 2500kg will require a Class Two licence under New Zealand regulations.
The vehicle has been tuned for conditions such as farm tracks, forestry roads and construction sites, reflecting feedback from local users. Pricing is set at $76,990 plus on-road costs, with deliveries scheduled to begin in May.
Also announced is the Seal 06 Touring, a plug-in hybrid wagon aimed at long-distance efficiency. Using a petrol-electric system, it offers a claimed driving range exceeding 1000km under test conditions, alongside limited electric-only capability for shorter trips.
The two models arrive as competition intensifies in New Zealand’s ute and hybrid markets, with manufacturers responding to changing fuel costs, emissions targets and evolving buyer demand.
